28TH PENNA REGIMENT
Letters to Sarah
June 1864 Marietta Field Hospital. Slightly wounded left hip.
December 1864 Court Martialed. Absent 7 days with out leave. Dismissed with no reprimand. Sixty-Nine Soldiers Court Martialed day before due to Christmas.
March 1865 Langling S.C. Journeyed from Alexandria to South Carolina. Camp is surrounded by swamp. Have heard the swamps of Virginia are refuge for runaway slaves. Ordered by General Harrison to act as First Lieutenant for the company. The Captain has taken sick and is unfit for duty.
May 1865 Marched from Raleigh N.C. to Alexandria. Marching toward home. Company built a bride over the Roanoke River to cross. Came across homesteads burned and charred. Soldiers laid as they fell nothing left but bones. “The war is over now and I harbor no personal animosity against any of them. I hope that the Government will bring Justice to the Ring Leaders of Rebellion. So Much Innocent Blood.”
June 1865 Answer to the question “When are you coming Home?” Enlisted will not be mustered out. Standing Army is limited to 18,000 troops. Its too small to protect Sea Ports, Fort D.C. and maintain peace for the Country.
